Green Revolution Cooling has secured the first customer for its cooling solution that submerges servers into mineral oil whose heat capacity is almost as good as that of water.

Provider of data center services Midas Networks has bought four CarnotJet 42U racks from Green Revolution, a module of optimal size, according to the vendor’s Director of Business Development Andy Price. The four-rack module comes with one pumping module, whose capacity can vary based on the desired heat load in the racks.

“It’s how we scale,” Price said. “You can buy less than four (racks) but the optimal size of the module is four 42U racks, coupled with one pumping module.”

Price said Midas will install equipment it owns and leases to customers in the oil-cooled enclosures. The system is slated to be installed in October and fully commissioned by 1 November.

Mineral oil’s heat capacity is 1,300 times higher than that of air, according to Green Revolution, making for a more effective cooling medium. Because of its low electrical conductivity, mineral oil – or dielectric fluid – is also safer to have near electronic components than water.

According to Price, the system installed at the Midas data center will be used as a showcase for the solution. Green Revolution reps will be able to bring potential customers into the facility to show them how the product works.

In addition to rack enclosures and pumping modules, the offering includes necessary server modifications. They include slight modification to the server board as well as encapsulation of the hard drive and removal of fans.

The system also has sensor monitoring, logging, real-time diagnostics and email and SNMP-alert functionality.
